LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KARK) — A local business is dealing in death, and hoping to give folks one final ride.

Last year, Glory Boats started making fishing boat caskets.

Owner Joel Schmidt had a close call, and then had an idea.

“My father took a bad fall from a ladder, and I wasn’t sure how he was going to do,” Schmidt explains. “That’s the kind of conversation you don’t want to be having. I tried to lighten the mood a little bit by saying ‘Oh, I could bury you in your fishing boat’.”

His dad was okay, and the idea was hooked. Nobody else makes caskets that look like fishing boats.

In the last year of business, Glory Boats has sold caskets around the United States.

“It’s a hard thing to handle, in fact I’ve tried to square that so often, because the phone rings and somebody says ‘we need a boat’ and I turn to my wife and say ‘good news, bad news, we sold a boat. Somebody needs one’,” Schmidt continues. “This doesn’t have to be a sad time in people’s lives. I know for myself when I go in one of these, I don’t want tears around me. I want happiness.”
