A pedestrian was killed in Crawford County Thursday when he was struck by a motorist who tried to avoid hitting a deer.

Richard William Davis, 67, of Chester was killed near Mountainburg in the area of Old 88 Road and Kimes Tower Road when at around 6:40 p.m. he was hit by a 1995 Toyota pickup driven by a man in his early 60s, according to Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown.

The driver told authorities that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer, but ended up hitting Davis as Davis was walking, according to Brown.

Davis’ body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory in Little Rock.
