Phone Scammer Pretends to Be Bentonville Cop to Extort Money From Victims

News

A man is calling local residents claiming to be a Bentonville officer and trying to scare them into giving him money.

Bentonville Police Department officials issued a news release warning of a scam in which a man calls community members, identifies himself as Lt. Kenny King with Bentonville police and tells them that they are accused of sexually harassing an underage female.

“[He] offers to make any criminal charges go away if the victim sends money to a specific cash app,” the news release states.

But there is no “Lt. Kenny King” working at the Police Department, the news release states.

Most of the scammer’s victims are concentrated in the Fort Smith and Lowell area, the news release states.

Police advise community members to not give any money to scammers and to contact authorities if they receive such a call.
