BELLA VISTA, AR — A couple is behind bars in Benton County on Capital Murder, Rape and First Degree Battery charges for the death of their 6-year-old son.
According to a police report, on March 29, Bella Vista Fire Crews responded to a 911 call from Cathy Lynn Torres who told dispatchers that her son Isaiah had stopped breathing. Crews found Isaiah unresponsive on the living room floor. Police say the father, Mauricio Torres, attempted CPR, as did emergency crews, but they were unable to revive Isaiah.
During a visual inspection of the child at Mercy Hospital, police say they could see “cuts to his head, knees and upper feet” and “wounds could be seen on his back and major bruising was seen on his right side.” Doctors also told police that a nurse found evidence of rape.
According to police, Mauricio Torres told doctors that the injuries to Isaiah’s back were causes by a chemical burn that he had been previously treated for at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
In an interview with police, Cathy Torres told officers she had witnessed Mauricio hit Isaiah with a belt, an extension cord and his knuckles in the past, causing Isaiah to bleed.
Bella Vista Police officers conducted a search warrant on the Torres home and found what appeared to be blood splatter on the walls, floor and ceiling of the master bedroom and bathroom. A police report also says it appeared there was blood spatter on two 15 pound dumbbells.
On March 31, a doctor of the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy on Isaiah at the Arkansas State Crime Lab and ruled his death a homicide. The police report states Isaiah Torres “died as a result of chronic child abuse with the final act of anal and rectal trauma occurring while he was in the exclusive care of his parents.”
