Pink Courage: Free Yoga for Survivors

Healing your body and mind during and after cancer. It is an important element to recovery that can sometime be one of the most difficult. We show you a new program aimed at making that easier in this month’s Pink Courage report.

“When they exercise or do yoga it makes them feel better and so we just want to improve their quality of life any way we can… We developed this wellness program to promote healthy living for cancer survivors and their caregivers through light exercise, yoga and weight training,” said Director of Cancer Prevention and Wellness, Casey Shelor.

20 breast cancer survivors are part of the pilot wellness program at Hope Cancer Resources in Springdale. Shelor said it can be hard for survivors to get back in the gym. They might feel intimidated or not know where to start if they are not physically where they were before their diagnosis.

“Once we know they’re restrictions we’re able to develop programs just for them and so we meet one-on-one with these participants so we can do safe exercises that’s great for their body and their minds.”

The program was funded through a grant from Susan G. Komen Ozark. It is completely free for any cancer survivor, current patient or caregiver. 15-year breast cancer survivor, Carolyn Morris, is a participant and new fan of yoga.

“They teach you relaxation through your breathing, you’re also learning through the stretching how to strengthen your body and when you get to our age, the balance is very important too… Who could complain about having a program like this and being able to come with your friends and have fun together and do something good for yourself at the same time… Your healing is better when you have someone to do it with,” said Morris.

For Shelor, who lost her grandma to cancer in 2005, it is a personal project to make sure survivors feel their best.

“If I can help someone’s grandma, sister, mother, feel a little bit better, I feel like it’s making such a difference.”
