New information says meditation could help reduce symptoms of trauma among prisoners.
Research shows about 85% of inmates have been the victim of a crime-related trauma, which puts them at risk for health problems and another jail sentence.
But, a new study found prisoners who practiced transcendental meditation for four months reported a significant decrease in trauma symptoms like anxiety, depression and sleep problems. Meditation was even more effective for inmates with the highest levels of trauma symptoms.
The study was led by researchers at Maharishi University of Management Center for Social and Emotional Health and published in ‘The Permanente Journal.’
