Religious Freedom Bill Petition Disappears from Some Facebook Newsfeeds

LITTLE ROCK, AR — Reports on Arkansas’ Religious Freedom bill have gained national attention, and they’re flooding many social media sites. Many signed a petition urging Governor Asa Hutchinson, (R) Arkansas, to veto HB 1228. One women recently started an online petition, she says thousands of people signed it and shared it on Facebook, but the next thing she knew it was no where to be found.

Gayla Paschall started a petition against the Religious Freedom bill on

“They also paired with Facebook so people could sign it and immediately share it on Facebook,” said Paschall.

She started the petition on Friday and it quickly gained momentum.

“All day Friday, Saturday, and then Sunday morning everything blew up,” said Paschall.

She says that’s when her posts, along with several other posts disappeared.

“I got about sixty or more e-mail messages from people were unable to share on their Facebook pages,” said Paschall.

Soon, word of the disappearing posts spread like wildfire.

“It’s a really strange fight against just the petition,” said Michael Biddle of Little Rock.

Some people are upset that a social media site would take the petition down.

“Social media is a way to spread the word a lot more quickly then Paul Revere riding through the streets,” said Biddle.

Others don’t believe Facebook should be a place for political discussion.

“I think it’s more of a forum for fun stuff. You would not put your political views on Facebook. Those things are personal,” said Wonda Broussard.

Paschall says she contacted and Facebook about why the posts were being taken down.

“I’ve emailed, emailed, and emailed, and I’ve heard nothing,” Paschall said.

The online petition gained about 16,000 signatures. A group gave it to Governor Hutchinson’s office Monday morning. We contacted Facebook about why the posts would be taken down and we have yet to hear back from them.
