River Valley bridges closed due to flooding

News

Record-breaking floods covering the River Valley, closing multiple roads, schools, and bridges. On Monday night (May 27), the Midland and I-540 bridges closed at 10 p.m. according to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT). There is no detour.

Northbound traffic will have to take exit 5, the Kelley Highway exit and southbound traffic will have to take exit 3 for Van Buren.

ARDOT said highways will be monitored for more potential closures.

Congressman Steve Womack was in the area Monday and got a chance to see the flooding up close.

Womack said when it comes to what the people in the River Valley can expect from Congress, it would start with a presidential disaster declaration. After that, other benefits will be triggered — including special hardship compensation and short term business loans.

But for now, he said the city is doing just what it needs to.

“The rest of the city is doing what great, resilient communities do,” Womack said. “They come together — churches, civic organizations, chambers. They work together to meet the emerging demands of the local population.”

Womack is in the area on Tuesday (May 28) to see more sites.
