Rogers Celebrates Milestone in City’s History

Two women in Rogers are making history as the city’s first all-female ambulance crew.

“We’ve worked pretty diligently as a profession as a whole to be more inclusive of female firefighters,” says Rogers Fire Department Chief Tom Jenkins.

Firefighter and paramedic Lacie Hewlett says, “Its been 13 years since we’ve had a female firefighter. I’ve been the only one.” Hewlett always knew she wanted to make a difference in her community. She says, “he had basically said that there weren’t very many firefighters at all around here – female firefighters.”

But then Kari Crump joined the Rogers Fire Department too. Crump says, “Being in a male dominated field – you definitely have a little bit more eyes on you – everybody kind of recognizes you as a woman.”

There’d never been an all-female ambulance crew in the City of Rogers, until Hewlett and Crump worked side by side for the first time. “We were busy that day. We were running all day and then I think it was pretty late at night – it was dark when we finally realized that – hey this is the first time we’ve had our broad squad here,” says Crump.  Hewlett adds, “we didn’t realize the impact it would make.”

The duo hopes they inspire young girls to be anything they want to be. Crump says, “mostly everything’s mental. If you have the mental ability and just challenge yourself, you can do whatever you want and I think people forget that sometimes and they don’t challenge themselves as much as they can and I think it’s important for them to see that they can.”

And Fire Chief Tom Jenkins is ready to see more fire-women join his department. He says, “It’s important for us to reflect our community. It’s important for us not only to show our community that we look like them, but all that diversity and inclusively does is make us better.”
