ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA) — Rogers Fire Chief Tom Jenkins is an appointee of the Arkansas School Safety Commission created by Gov Asa Hutchinson.

There are 18 people on this task force.

Jenkins talked about what the priorities are for this group when it comes to improving the safety of children.

“Firearms in our schools is an epidemic,” Jenkins said. “We certainly did not see this level of violence since really around Columbine, so that was 1999. We do have to address protecting our children, as a father who has kids in the public school system, I have a vested interest to make sure we do things right.”

The task force will be giving their first report to Hutchinson on July 1.
