Safety on the Radar of University Police After Deadly Accident

News

Two lives are now changed forever after a distracted driver hit and killed a university student. Now, law enforcement is addressing safety concerns near campus.

After a deadly accident on campus, safety is on the radar of University of Arkansas police.

“It’s unfortunate we can’t be at every crosswalk,” Capt. Matt Mills from the University of Arkansas Police Department said.

The speed limit near campus is 25 miles per hour.

We posted up on Garland Avenue to see how fast drivers are going.

But it’s not always the driver who is risking their life.

“They just cross wherever is convenient to them,” Capt. Mills said.

We sat on Arkansas Avenue for less than 20 minutes, and we saw several people darting in front of cars – some on their cell phone.

As the campus mourns the loss of one of their Razorbacks, police are emphasizing the importance of paying attention.

“Everyone was impacted by this,” Capt. Gary Crain from University of Arkansas Police said. “And we just don’t want to see it again.”
