Sales Tax Adds First Responders in Prairie Grove

KNWA is local election headquarters and a sales tax increase is now approved for the City of Prairie Grove that will go toward increasing the number of first responders.

“I voted for it, I think it is a fantastic thing,” said voter Scott Campbell.

This will increase the sales tax from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent, money gained that will go to help safeguard the city.

“We’re proud that the citizens trust us with this,” said Chief J.C. Dobbs of the Prairie Grove Fire Department.

Chief Dobbs said the increase from the measure will allow his department to grow.

“We did our best to put out the information out there and so they know exactly what we are going to do and we wouldn’t have asked if there wasn’t a need,” Chief Dobbs said.

The revenue gained from the .05 percent sales tax increase will allow the fire department to hire three new positions to make sure its full-staffed at all hours of the night for faster response times.

“We have a couple of people that cover the daytime but there was no one here at night,” Chief Dobbs said.

Voters like Scott Campbell say this will help first responders catch up to the city’s expanding population.

“To be able to put more paid employees instead of all volunteers or just part-time is always a good thing. The reason why is because this community is growing by leaps and bounds,” Campbell said.

A growth that Chief Dobbs believes will keep his crew busy in the city with the fire department.

“This will just ensure that someone is here at two in the morning to get the truck out,” Chief Dobbs said.

While not everyone was in favor of the increase, many voters said they were happy to help boost the numbers of Prairie Grove’s bravest.

“Anything else I can do to help them in any way shape or form, then I do it,” Campbell said.

The sales tax increase will also allow the city to hire two additional police officers.
