Safe. It’s one word used the community of Elkins uses to describe how they feel when Officer James Todd is around.
Karen Reynolds nominated Todd for his service to this small town, not just for patrolling the streets, and teaching defensive driving and volunteering within the area, but for the officer’s time in the school district.
“Officer Todd has a special place in this community. He is our school resource officer, and he’s also here when we need him,” said Karen. “With everything that’s happened lately in schools and other parts of the country, I’ve always felt very very safe knowing that Officer Todd was there. My daughter knows that if something is going on, she can go to him and then my son does the same.”
And Karen’s son, Alex, agrees.
“It just feels more safe to have an officer around like Officer Todd,” said Alex.
Alex says he finds comfort in seeing Officer Todd at the door at school. Although it’s something simple like asking about the students’ days, sometimes it’s a small act of kindness that makes the biggest difference.
“I think sometimes small town officers get the wrap that they’re just out to give tickets in speed trap towns, but we’re not just that. Our officers are very helpful, they’re always there when we need them. They make us feel safe, we’re very blessed to live in the small community where everybody is so approachable,” said Karen.
