Loretta Mansell nominated school resource officer Mitchel Valley for our Salute the Badge series because of all he does while he is at school.
“He walks around the halls, he pops in classrooms, he goes with lessons. I’ll be in the middle of a lesson and I’ll just pull him in and ask him tell us about this, Officer Valley,” said Mansell “He volunteers, he helps coach our “Excel to Fitness” for our boys, he goes out and he runs for our “Girls on the Run.” He even volunteered to go to the “Girls on the Run” race in Bentonville in the fall and he had buddy runners and he was a buddy runner for some of our girls. He took ’em out running and they did the 5K.”
Mansell even pulls the school resouce officer into her first grade classroom from time to time. His interaction allows for the kids to be more comfortable with Valley and it is one way Mansell sees the biggest impact.
“It’s really important that they are not afraid of the police. This has helped the students be able to go up to him if they have ever have a problem,” said Mansell. You hope that they’ll grow up and look at him as a role model.”
Although the kids look up to him, even think he’s batman because of all his batman attire, the students also realize there’s more to Offficer Valley than just a badge.
“They actually know he’s a real police officer,” said Mansell. “He carries a weapon, the whole thing. They know he’s here to keep us safe.”
