Throughout the holiday season many people give gifts to children in need, but what about our seniors.
Over 600 seniors in Northwest Arkansas had their name on a Give a Santa to a Senior tree this season.
This week each of them will receive their Christmas gift. This afternoon i had the chance to deliver one of those packages alongside one of Santa’s secret helpers.
Kimberly Christian is just one of many local volunteers helping Santa deliver Christmas gifts to seniors.
“Once you do it once you’re kind of hooked on it, they light up your whole season,” said volunteer Kimberly Christian.
One of those seniors is Ms.Lowrey
“Especially during Christmas, what’s it like to have some people come over and hang out with you in their free time,” said Fox 24 News reporter Katie Davila.
“I like that,” said Santa for a Senior recipient, Ms.Lowrey
“Our seniors sometimes are overlooked and I think there’s more of them than you think there are that are shut ins and not able to spend time with family or friends,” said Christian.
Home instead is just one of many organizations around the nation helping ensure seniors have a memorable Christmas but Christian said being able to give back to people like her friend Ms.Lowrey is the reason she is a Santa for a senior.
“it’s overwhelming it fills your heart to know the impact you’re having on them, it’s such a little thing but at the same time such a big thing to them,” said Christian.
And Mr.Lowrey said it is one of her favorite times of the year.
“I appreciate it, you don’t have to bring it but I appreciate it,” said Lowrey.
But her favorite part of their visits, the food
“They always bring something to eat, that’s why i’m so fat,” said Lowrey.
Because of the help home instead has given to her Lowrey said she appreciates the company all year round.
“All the Homestead people are welcome here, this is my house and they’re welcome here,” said Lowrey.
Volunteers are needed throughout the week to ensure that all gifts can be hand delivered.
