Sebastian County Deputy Knocked Unconscious by Inmate

News

FORT SMITH, Ark. (KFTA) — A Sebastian County Detention Center deputy was knocked unconscious by an inmate Monday.

Kevin Rojas, an inmate at the jail for failure to appear, is now accused of second-degree battery for striking and knocking out deputy Tyler Engleman.

“Engleman was assaulted while feeding inmates at about 12:20 p.m.,” Chief Deputy Hobe Runion stated in a news release.

Engleman was transported to a hospital and was treated and released. He will get three days off to recover, Runion said.

Several other inmates assisted Engleman during the assault by restraining Rojas until other deputies arrived.

“We appreciate the actions of the other inmates in helping to protect our deputy,” Runion said.

Rojas has been booked into the jail for several prior arrests, including once for aggravated assault on a family member.
