NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KNWA)– A bill that could affect your home is making its way through the Arkansas legislature.
Senate Bill 170 seeks to place restrictions on residential building design.
Currently, when building and designing a home, there are safety regulations in place but some local city councils are pushing for design regulations as well.
This bill would protect the right of the individual home owners and builders to design a home however they want as long as it follows safety regulations.
The Northwest Arkansas Home Builders Association said by forcing residental buildings to follow a design code, it takes away creativity and poses a potential affordability problem as well.
Shana Kasparek, the executive officer of the Northwest Arkansas Home Builders Association said, “The first time home buyer is so excited to buy and build their home. If you put regulations on that first time home buyer, they may not be able to afford that home that they want. It also does not help our builders to attract those people to our communities.”
The bill has passed the Senate and the House will decide it’s fate on Wednesday.
