Several Arkansas Retailers Stop Selling Unwashed Poppy Seeds

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA) — Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge has announced that several retailers have stopped selling unwashed poppy seeds after an Arkansan died from a poppy seed tea overdose.

The seeds, when unwashed, contain a lethal amount of morphine.

Manufacturers claim they’re a natural alternative to opioids, but the FDA said those claims are unfounded.

Walmart quit selling the seeds and encourages smaller retailers to do the same.
