ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA) — A Rogers non-profit is returning home from disaster relief efforts in Alabama to find it’s been nominated for a prestigious award.

Sheep Dog Impact Assistance is making an impact on veterans and first responders across the country.

“They all decided to jump in their vehicles and join this community and help put it back together,” says Jason Dixon, Disaster Response Coordinator for SDIA.

When devastation strikes, Sheep Dog answers the call.

“They we were able to hit 19 properties. We cleared 278 trees. We assisted 61 people,” Dixon said.

The NWA Sheep Dog Assistance Team stayed at Smith Station Baptist Church in Lee County, Alabama, for four days.

The team worked around the clock with other Sheep Dogs from Texas, Florida, Virginia, Indiana, and Tennessee.

“We’ve been busy. We’ve had teams in Florida, Puerto Rico, Alabama, this is our second time in less than six months that we have been in the state of Alabama,” Sergeant Major Lance Nutt said.

It’s work to help veterans and first responders get off the couch and recover the sense of camaraderie and meaning they felt while in uniform, is now being recognized on a national level.

SDIA is Top 20 Finalist for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s 2019 Citizen Honors Awards.

“For us to also make it into the top 20 nationally, I think was a testament to the men and women that serve so passioniately in our organization and the difference they are making nationwide,” Nutt said.

The Citizen Honors Awards recognizes those who embody the values of the medal of honor – courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship and patriotism.

Nutt says just to be nominated is a tremendous honor.

“We’re looking forward to having serious conversations about how we can do more and how Sheep Dog Impact Assistance can playa role in helping our veterans get off the couch and reingage in life in a positive way.”

Winners will be announced in Washington D.C, at a special ceremony on National Medal of Honor Day, March 25.
