In Arkansas, 90 percent of single mothers do not have a college degree.
The Single Parents Scholarship Fund of NWA is helping change this statistic and pave a pathway to prosperity for local parents.
“My son’s father passed away when he was 18 months old and that was really really difficult and that was the first semester that I got the single parent scholarship fund,” said scholarship recipient Jennifer Hackler.
Just a few years ago Jennifer Hackler was one of thousands of single parents without a college degree.
Almost 10 semesters later she’s received her masters.
“It’s amazing to be able to have my degree and be in the career I want to be in and not have to worry about that anymore and I don’t have to struggle financially,” said Hackler.
“She had a dream, a goal to be a teacher and she achieved that, and to watch her achieve that goal but also know that it wasn’t easy. And to watch her literally give up everything for Michael her son, to be successful is so impactful and beautiful to see,” said Director of the Single Parents Scholarship Fund, Tyler Clark.
It’s hard work that Director of the SPSF Tyler Clark said leads to success not only benefitting the parents’s lives, but their childrens’ as well.
“It’s kind of a two generation approach, not only do they see their parents be successful in their goals to get a post secondary degree, they’re also modeling great behavior for their kids,” said Clark.
Kids like Jennifer’s son Michael.
“He was 6 months old when I went back to school so he grew up seeing go to college and seeing me overcome everything I need to overcome and stay up late to do my homework. And now he says he wants to go to college and says he wants to be a teacher just like me,” said Hackler.
And while her journey was long it’s one Hackler said was worth it.
“Those few years of the struggles and the tears and the stress, it’s worth it to have that career you’ve always wanted. It’s really been a life changer for us,” said Hackler.
