The Special Olympics 2019 Winter Games took place Friday in Springdale.
Thirty teams with a combined 300 athletes from around the state gathered at the Jones Center to compete in the Winter Games.
The athletes played floor hockey and participated in a speed skating competition.
Irvin Humphrey, the director of sports and training for Special Olympics Arkansas, talked about how exciting it was to interact with all the players.
“It’s really exciting. For one, they are excited about being here; then, of course, once it’s close to the competition, they’re excited about the next competition, and so it’s all excitement.”
The Special Olympics organization aims to teach these athletes about competition and also about how to stay healthy and active.
