Special Olympics Arkansas is right around the corner, and athletes are gearing up.

The pre-qualifying games were held Friday in Fayetteville for athletes from Benton, Washington and Madison counties. The athletes competed in a variety of track and field events.

The games are for participants who want to advance to the state summer games.

“They look forward to this all year,” said Donna Kilmer, field representative for Special Olympics Arkansas. “Although they do competitions all year long and different events, this event is a big one for them and they always look forward to it. So there are lots of smiles.”

The state summer games will be held at Harding University in Searcy from May 23-25.
