Lauren Hayes MS, CFY-SLP is a speech language pathologist, a trained licensed professional that specializes in evaluating and treating individuals with communication disorders, swallowing disorders, voice disorders, and cognitive disorders at Washington Regional Out patient Therapy Services in Har-Ber Meadows in Springdale.
“Typically … we see patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s, ALS, MS Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, that are now suffering from (an) inability to communicate properly with their caregivers or family members, having difficulty with swallowing. Choking coughing when they are eating or drinking, Voice problems after head and neck cancer with radiation and chemotherapy, and cognitive disorders such as problem solving, memory, and reasoning skills. “
“So the easiest way for a patient to be evaluated by a speech therapist here at Washington Regional is to see their primary care physician, or one their specialists, such as their neurologist , and all we would need is a referral sent over for speech therapy, from their doctor to our facility. “
“A typical evaluation lasts about an hour. The first half of the session is just talking about past medical history and the patients significant problems that they are dealing with currently and then we would move on into testing so cognitive and language testing tend to take a little bit longer than the swallowing and the voice test.”
“We are a clinic in conjunction with occupational therapy , physical therapy and pelvic therapy. A lot of times our patients will need more than one discipline and in that point in time we communicate as a team, we work as a team to develop a plan of care for each patient. and develop their goals individually for them. and we communicate back and forth between each other as well with their physicians about their progress and things that we need to adjust. “
