SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA) — Springdale is the first city in Northwest Arkansas to become a “Pro-Life City”.
City council members voted Tuesday, Aug. 13 during a meeting. The measure passed by a vote 6 to 1.
Several residents were at the meeting including those for and those against Springdale becoming a “Pro-Life City”.
Resident Lisa Ecke supports the resolution and said, “I support it because it is non discriminatory. It doesn’t discriminate from life to death. It doesn’t matter what your economic background is (and) what your ethnicity- it embraces life. “
Resident Juli Odum opposes the resolution.
Odum said, “I didn’t think it was the business of the city council to bring it forward. It has no teeth anyway and it’s stimulated a lot division that could’ve been avoided.”
Mayor Doug Sprouse said the resolution shows how the city is taking a stance on a controversial topic.
Sprouse said he was notified about Planned Parenthood potentially opening a Springdale location.
Springdale officials hope “Pro-Life City” status will discourage Planned Parenthood from coming to Springdale.
Those with Planned Parenthood are looking for a new location in Northwest Arkansas.
