NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KNWA) — An American Airlines flight made an unplanned landing at Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA) Saturday morning after pilots detected a strange smell in the cockpit, according to Kelly Johnson, the Airport Director for Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport.
70 passengers were aboard the American Airlines flight out of XNA to Dallas. They were forced to deboard back at XNA while maintenance inspected the plane.
According to Johnson, emergency crews were on standby but never deployed. She said these types of alerts are fairly routine.
“These things happen. We have 20 to 25 of these a year. Most of the time it’s nothing, and it appears it’s the same in this case,” Johnson said. “They didn’t ask for assistance, but they [fire trucks] were ready to go if they needed to.”
Johnson said it is still unclear the source of the odor.
