FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — A student and their parents were arrested after a stolen handgun was brought to school, authorities say.

The Van Buren Police Department said the student brought the gun to Central Elementary School in Van Buren on Monday.

No students alerted the school, but one told a parent later that night. A school resource officer looked into the matter and determined the student did bring a gun to school, police said.

Investigators later learned the student’s parents were aware of the gun and that it was taken to school. Police said the parents made up a story to cover up the incident, but they later changed that story and led officers to the gun. It was hidden in their back yard.

The juvenile faces charges of possession of a handgun on school property and theft by receiving. The parents, Ruben Granados, 32, and Melissa Granados, 29, were booked into the Crawford County Detention Center and face charges of theft by receiving and tampering with physical evidence, police said.

“School resource officers with the Van Buren Police Department are working closely with Van Buren School District officials to educate students on the importance of immediately reporting this type of behavior in the future. The safety of our students is paramount, and we want to encourage our students to help keep their classmates safe,” the Van Buren Police Department said in a statement.
