Stump Dump Fire Cleanup Possibly Impacted by Government Shutdown

The Bella Vista City Council discussed the Trafalgar Road fire at the end of its meeting Tuesday.

Mayor Peter Christie said the city has been given a plan that outlines seven different remedies to put out the stump dump and that a choice has not been officially made yet, but one solution does seem to be the favorite.

“Total excavation of the whole site will probably be the way to go just to be sure. It not only puts the fire out, but whatever else is down there, we just don’t want it sitting there for years and years and years and leaching into any kind of water system,” said Bella Vista Mayor Peter Christie.

Christie said that he met with Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who suggested getting more help and funds from the Environmental Protection Agency, but with the partial government shutdown, getting help is on hold for now.
