BENTON, Ark. – A pistol and $14,000 worth of drugs were tossed out of a truck trying to get away from local police on Monday.

That’s according to the Benton Police Department (BNPD) in a Wednesday afternoon news release that included photos (see above and below) of the items being thrown from the moving vehicle.

The chase started along Hwy. 67 when an officer with the BNPD’S Benton Interstate Criminal Enforcement Patrol (BICEP) unit tried to stop a stolen pickup on Highway 67, the release states.

While crossing the Saline River bridge, the suspects reportedly threw out a plastic bag that was recovered by officers and found to contain about 1.4 pounds of methamphetamine, along with assorted prescription pills. Police say the suspects also threw out a Glock 43 pistol, which was also recovered and determined to have been stolen in Garland County.

The driver led the BNPD officer and deputies from the Selective Enforcement Unit of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office on a pursuit onto Highway 229 toward Benton that ended in the 12000 block of Interstate 30. The two people inside the truck then tried to run away but were caught with help from Saline County deputies and Arkansas State Police troopers.

“There was a lot of seamless effort from everyone, and BNPD is grateful to work alongside them. Our community is safer as a result of these individuals being taken into custody,” said BNPD Police Chief Scotty Hodges, adding that the incident showcases the invaluable knowledge and expertise of both local and state agencies and, ultimately, resulted in fewer narcotics and criminals on the streets.

William Wiley, 27, of Malvern and Faith Rowland, 22, of Hot Springs were charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine, Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Firearms, Possession of Schedule II drug with the Purpose to Deliver, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, two counts of Theft by Receiving (stolen vehicle and stolen firearm), Use of Another Person’s Property to Facilitate a Crime, and Fleeing on foot. Wiley was also charged with Fleeing by Vehicle and Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons. Both suspects had active warrants from multiple agencies.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the BNPD at (501) 778-1171 or (501) 315-TIPS.
