MOUNTAINBURG, Ark. (KNWA) — Southwestern Electric Power Company urges community members to stay clear of downed power lines.

“Please remind the public to beware of downed lines,” said Peter Main, corporate communications officer for SWEPCO.

Downed power lines could still be energized, Main said.

“Stay away, keep others away, and don’t touch anything that may be in contact with the lines, like fences or even puddles of water,” Main said. “Call your utility or 911.”

Main sent out the alert after fierce storms struck Mountainburg and caused extensive damage.

Crawford County authorities said there were numerous power lines down and 2,000 energy customers without power. Power company personnel were traveling across the area to safely handle the downed lines.
