Team Davis: A League of Their Own Reunion Game Brings Out the Stars

SPRINGDALE — It was Geena Davis’ team versus Rosie O’Donnell’s in the four-inning League of Their Own Reunion softball game. KNWA News caught up with many of the stars on the blue carpet, who were celebrating how far women have come in athletics, including two pioneers of the sport.

“It’s exciting. That would never happen before. I think it’s exciting. We watch everything that we can with the girls,” said Gina Casey, former honorary member of the women’s league.

Geena Davis said she is surprised how much impact the film has had then and now.

“I didn’t realize that it was going to last until now so I have just as many young women or teenage girls or little girls say I play sports because of that movie now as when it came out,” said Davis.

Country music star Sara Evans, also taking a stroll on the blue carpet said sports is a big deal for her family of 8.

“I was just at my daughter’s softball game last night so yeah hopefully it will give them the confidence to try and pursue anything that they dream.”

Former professional softball player and Olympian Jennie Finch also played in the game. “It’s so exciting to see that you can google any sport now and see a woman representing that sport and just celebrate how far we’ve come and enjoy it,” said Finch.

Team Geena Davis ended up winning the game 7-3. The screening of A League of Their Own followed on the scoreboard at Arvest Ball Park, but was cancelled early due to inclement weather.
