Technology Helps Fight Food Hunger in NWA

News

Hunger and homelessness is a growing problem in Arkansas. Fayetteville 7 Hill’s Homeless Center is trying to change that. 7 Hills partnered with Not Impossible Labs, and local Northwest Arkansas technology companies to make it possible for people to get a meal just by sending a quick text.

19% of Arkansans experience food insecurity, and that puts the Natural State above the national average. “It’s not just people who are literally homeless..it can be the kids your kids go to school with. It can be your neighbor. Food insecurity is a challenge for a lot of people in our community today,” said Solomon Burchfield with 7 Hills.

Michelle Johnson is someone who understands that pain all too well. “It’s been a struggle but were making it,” said Johnson. “Some tragedy brought us to Northwest Arkansas. We had to pack up from our hometown and leave everything behind. We got here and we had absolutely nothing.”

7 Hills Homeless Center partnered with Hunger Not Impossible to create a way for people to know where where their next meal will come from. “The project they brought to Northwest Arkansas is all about providing a free meal to an individual who is experiencing homeless or housing insecurity.”

7 Hills is the first center use this technology.   “The individual client texts meal places their order and is able to walk in the restaurant and pick up a meal judgment free and get on with their day,” said Burchfield.

Johnson said the fact that her son can get a meal with a simple text will make all the difference. “That meal knowing it’s going to be there was like hey lets use the app. We can get us something to eat don’t worry about it, it’s going to be okay,” said Johnson.

Burchfield said many of the phone being used by this program are either government or shelter provided.

The only way to keep this program up and running is through donations. You can donate by texting “donate’ to 70175, or click here
