Teen Charged in Officer’s Killing Pleads Not Guilty

News

(via KARK) — A local teen has entered a not guilty plea in the June 12 shooting death of a city police officer.

Derrick Heard, 16, is accused of firing the shot that killed Newport Police Department Lt. Patrick Weatherford, 41 and is charged with Capital Murder.

Heard appeared in Jackson County Circuit Court on Thursday. During the arraignment, his attorney requested a mental evaluation for the teen citing “mental disease or defect.”

Also in court was Tyler Calamese, 18, who pleaded not guilty to charges of Breaking or Entering, Theft of Property and Furnishing a Deadly Weapon to a Minor. Calamese had previously been held on probable cause in the officer’s killing until police announced the arrest of Heard.

Heard remains in jail but Calamese is out on bond.
