Thieves on the Rise During the Holiday Season

News

The holiday season is back and with it comes thieves.

Last year more than 1.4 million dollars was lost to charity schemes alone in the united states.

According to a report from ADT’s Your Local Security, 510 Arkansans were victims of schemes in 2017.

Seniors citizens are the most vulnerable this time of year. Arkansas seniors lost more than 1.7 million dollars last year.

ADT and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge warn that you need to know how to keep yourself from becoming a victim during the holidays.

Rutledge issued the following warning, “While giving Tuesday is a big day for donations, we know Americans often give more than on just one allotted day. Leading up to the season of giving, it is important for each of us to thoroughly research where we send our money.”

Rutledge also offers the following tips:
    -Only give to legitimate companies.
-Get the organization’s name, address, website and phone number before donating.
-Watch out for similar organization names as some scam artists will use names similar to those of existing, reputable nonprofits.
-You can even use Guidestar.org to compare nonprofit organizations and get more information on the organizations asking for your donations.
