Due to heavy rain, several northwest Arkansas roads were closed Wednesday (May 1) due to flooding.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states more than half of flood-related drownings happen when a car drives in dangerous flood water, and it doesn’t take as much water as many may think.
The National Weather Service said it takes only a foot of rushing water to carry a small car and two feet for most cars.
Channing Barker, communications director for Benton County asked drivers to be patient and careful if they are driving on flooded roads.
“We’re not doing this to make it inconvenient,” Barker said. “We’re doing this for your safety because we’ve seen too many times where people tried to go over rushing waters and it doesn’t end great for them.”
