Today marks 25th anniversary of Fort Smith, Van Buren tornado

FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — It was 25 years ago today, a deadly tornado ripped through the Fort Smith and Van Buren area.

April 21, 1996, a severe weather outbreak stretched from Northwest Texas to the River Valley.

Two children were killed, multiple people were injured and 1,800 homes were damaged.

The F3 rated tornado was estimated to be about half a mile wide with a ten mile long path.
