University of Arkansas Continues Sidewalk Tradition with 2016 Class

News

At the University of Arkansas on Thursday, a school tradition carried on today as crews blasted names into the ground.

Every student that graduates from the University of Arkansas has their name etched into the concrete with their entire graduating class.

The tradition began back in the 1870’s.

Crews started blasting the names from the class of 2016 on Thursday.

Crew members say it’s taking more labor to get the job done this year.

“The list of names are getting so big now that it’s taking two crews to do it. It used to just take one. This year we had almost 6,000 graduates going in the walk, so it takes two crews,” Lonnie Luper, skill trade painter, said.

It will take about 3 weeks to get all of the names in the ground.

In addition to this year’s addition, the first 50 years will soon be refurbished and possibly replaced by granite.
