UPDATE: Child Pedestrian Accident Deputy Named


UPDATE (8:30 p.m.): Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson identified the deputy whose patrol vehicle struck the child as Sgt. Dustin Carlton. Simpson said that Carton “had no contributing factor in the accident.”

UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): The Benton County deputy was on duty when he struck the child that ran into the street, according to a Bentonville Police Department news release.

The new release also states that witnesses said that the child ran into the roadway in front of the deputy’s vehicle and that the deputy could not do anything to avoid hitting the child.

“The accident is still under investigation by the Bentonville Police Department but the preliminary investigation does not show the deputy with any contributing factors in the cause of the accident,” the news release states.

The deputy’s name is still not being released.

ORIGINAL STORY: BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — Bentonville Police say a child was struck by a Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy vehicle early Friday morning at the intersection of NE 2nd Street and NE I Street in Bentonville.

According to reports, the child, who is a Washington Junior High School student, ran into NE 2nd Street and collided with the deputy’s vehicle. The child was conscious at the time of the accident, but his current condition is unknown.

The accident is under investigation by the Bentonville Police Department.  The name of the deputy involved will not be released, and he is not being put on administrative leave at this time.
