UPDATE: The victims in Thursday night’s shooting, at 912 N. Leverett Avenue, have been identified as Courtney Willie, 21, who was shot in the leg, and Elizabeth Dawson, 20, who died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Fayetteville police and an arrest warrant.
Shortly after 10 a.m., Friday, March 15, the Springdale Police Department (SPD) took Dekota Harvey, 22, a Fayetteville resident, into custody without incident.
Lt. Jeff Taylor with Springdale PD said Harvey was located at Applegate Apartments. That’s nearly 10 miles away.
He surrendered himself to police and SWAT officers after a three-hour standoff.
The incident unfolded on Thursday night, March 14, when a female called 9-1-1 and told police that she kicked her boyfriend out of the apartment but he was outside, “acting like a psychopath,” according to the arrest warrant.
The woman shares the apartment with her boyfriend (Harvey, who is the suspect), and her roommate.
She told dispatchers, Harvey, had a sword and gun that he kept in his car.
The woman also told the dispatcher he was trying to get back into the apartment to retrieve his XBox.
A gunshot was then heard, and the female — who was screaming and crying — told the 9-1-1 operator the suspect shot her in the leg and she didn’t know the status of her friends.
Officers arrived at the location and found two female victims. One victim was unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Both were taken to Washington Regional Medical Center — the female shot in the chest was pronounced dead a short time later.
The roommate, who fled the apartment, met up with police at a nearby business. She went to the police station and said the Willie and Harvey had been having problems and were arguing earlier in the evening.
Later in the night, detectives spoke with two witnesses who had picked up Harvey at a McDonald’s on Robinson Ave. in Springdale. The witnesses told detectives Harvey had abandoned his vehicle when they picked him up. In Harvey’s vehicle, police said they saw a box of ammunition and a spent cartridge. Havey’s car, a Chevrolet Malibu, was towed to a secure lot.
Harvey was arrested in June 2018 for third-degree domestic violence. That incident involved “punching his girlfriend,” according to police.
Currently, Harvey is at Washington County jail arrested for one count of capital murder and one count of attempted capital murder; he’s held on no bond.
The Springdale Police Department is following a lead for a shooting that occurred in Fayetteville last night.
According to Lt. Jeff Taylor, Springdale is assisting Fayetteville Police and SWAT team members are on Park Street and Caudle Avenue near the Springdale Airport for a report of a possible sighting of Dekota Harvey.
The call came in at 7:15 a.m.
Lt. Taylor said that they believe he is in an apartment at Applegate Apartments. Police have been trying to make contact for half an hour with no success.
Harvey shot two people last night, killing one of them, according to police.
