FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA) — A man possibly connected to a double homicide in Fort Smith died after he was rushed to a hospital Thursday.

Lewis Shores, 19, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center at approximately 2:15 p.m., according to a Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office news release.

“A plastic bag was found over his head,” the news release states. “CPR was administered by detention personnel. Fort Smith EMS transported Shores to Baptist Hospital in Fort Smith.”

Shores was isolated by himself in the cell.

Shores died around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday night, according to Captain Philip Pevehouse with Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office.

His body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Arkansas State Police will investigate the matter and the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review in relation to jail policies.

According to Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Shue, charges against Shores have been dismissed due to the death of the defendant.

Shores was in jail for aggravated residential burglary and theft of property and has pending charges out of Logan County.

Lewis Shores was the target of a manhunt in Logan County in September. Authorities are investigating whether he is connected to the deaths of Jimmy and Norma Grubb, who were found dead in their residence in the 7700 block of Hermitage Drive in Fort Smith.

Shores fled the scene of a vehicle crash in Logan County before he was captured. The vehicle he was driving was found to be from the residence where Jimmy and Norma Grubb were found dead.

Shortly after Shores was arrested, his 43-year-old mother Angela Shores was found dead in her apartment at Southbrooke Apartments, 8201 U.S. 271. Angela Shores was evicted from the apartment and supposed to be out of it by Aug. 14.

Her death is under investigation.
