UPDATE: Man Facing Murder Charge After Shooting in Prairie Grove

A Prairie Grove man was arrested and is facing a first-degree murder charge following a shooting in Prairie Grove on Tuesday afternoon.

William Smith, 75, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a victim with a gunshot wound at a home around 3:50 pm on Tuesday in the 100 block of Meade Ave in Lincoln.

The probable cause report states that the victim, Shane Crawford, 62, flagged down a witness saying that he had been shot. Crawford slumped down in the person’s vehicle and the witness called 911. Crawford was transported to Washington County Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office determined the shooting actually happened at near the 16000 block of East Applehill Road in Prairie Grove, where Crawford was initially picked up.

While deputies were on scene, Smith made spontaneous statements that he shot a man while speaking on the phone. Smith was detained for questioning but due to his level of intoxication, the interview was postponed.

During the process of clearing the residence, deputies observed a firearm in plain view. Smith was read his Miranda Rights on December 19.

Smith admitted to shooting Crawford in the back with .22 revolver after a physical altercation. Smith will appear in court on Friday, December 21 for a bond hearing.
