UPDATE: Police Arrest Fayetteville Bank Robbery Suspect

UPDATE: The Fayetteville Police Department (FPD) arrested the suspect, Richard Varnell, 42, around 11 p.m. on April 19. 

Numerous tips led police to Varnell, who was located next to a building on N. Shiloh Dr. in Fayetteville, according to FPD’s Facebook post. 

“This case could not have been cracked without the hard work of not only our Fayetteville Police officers but the hard work of our media and citizens,” the post said. “We did it together!!”

Varnell was arrested for:

  • Aggravated Robbery
  • Shoplifting
  • Criminal Trespass
  • Possession of Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Fayetteville Police department responds to a bank robbery on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The call came in just after 8:40 a.m. of an armed robbery in Centennial bank.

Police are staged at the corner of MLK and 1 Mile Road.

This is an on-going investigation. The robber was described as a white male in his 20’s, possibly wearing a black jacket with blue pants that have a blue strip down the side.

The robber has a slim build and weighs roughly 150 pounds.

On Friday, December 7, 2018, the same Centennial Bank on West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in Fayetteville, was robbed. A man entered the bank and pointed a gun at the teller.  The gun appeared to have the letters “SS” above the trigger guard, according to the FBI.
