The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a list of food safety recommendations Tuesday to victims of flooding in the Midwest.
USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says planning ahead is the best option, but the main priority is to avoid consuming any product that comes into contact with flood water.
Once contaminated food is disposed of, any surviving tools or dishes must be thoroughly washed before use.
The FSIS also says that any refrigerator or freezer that is even partially submerged by floodwaters must be discarded.
