Vendors Gear Up For Fayetteville Farmers Market

FAYETTEVILLE — A feast for the eyes, ears and palate will be back in action this weekend. The Fayetteville Farmers’ Market will open for the 2015 season on Saturday and farmers are preparing for the rush.

Kenneth Fields is in the garden, getting his fruits and veggies ready for Saturday. Fields is in his seventh year participating in the event.

“Once you get those seeds in the dirt, you’re gonna babysit them. Every day, it’s checking them every 2 to 3 hours, checking your temperatures in your greenhouse, checking the water levels, making sure the soil is moist,” Fields said.

This year’s cold and gloomy winter has made that process even more tedious.

“On a cool, cloudy day, they kind of sit there and wait. They’re kind of in hibernate mode. They like to have warm sunny days to grow in,” Fields said.

Like many local farmers, fields has been playing catch up, in hopes of presenting a wide-variety of produce, for residents to pick from.

“We will have about 53 varieties of tomatoes, of most of which are air loom and then, we also will have about 20 varieties of peppers, ranging from extremely hot to sweet,” Fields said.

Farmers say the support of locally grown food keeps them coming back every year.

“It’s nice to be able to provide fresh produce to people that’s no more than a day old. You know, most produce that you go to the big chain retail stores and get is anywhere from days to weeks old,” Fields said.

So long as the customers keep coming back, fields says he will too.

“That’s one of the things that keeps us farmers going is the fact that our customers, um, they show that appreciation to us by coming out, by supporting us,” Fields said.

The Farmers’ Market will open Saturday at 7 a.m. and go until 2:00 p.m. on the Fayetteville square.
