Walmart Senior V.P. Inspired to Chair Komen Ozark 2017 Race for the Cure

News

This Saturday, thousands will take part in the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Ozark Race for the Cure. This year’s theme is “Honor a Hero, Be a Hero,” and the 2017 race chair shared who her personal hero is.

“It’s time. It was my time.” Walmart Senior Vice President General Merchandising Manager Consumables Latriece Watkins said of her role as Race for the Cure chair.

Watkins has a prominent role at this year’s Komen Ozark Race for the Cure event. Because of her mother’s fight against breast cancer she took on the role as chair of the big event.

“This year is about 25 years post my mom’s diagnosis with breast cancer.” Watkins remembered.

Watkins was a senior in high school when her mother, Faye, found out she had the most important fight of her life to win.

“She [Faye] is a strong breast cancer survivor and I’m really proud of that and I’m proud of her,” Watkins shared. “It’s caused me to think back a little bit over the experience that we had.”

That personal connection is precisely why Komen Ozark tapped Watkins to to step in.

“Komen Ozark and Susan G. Komen hits her on a personal level, like so many, which is why we’re around and why we do what we do,” Komen Ozark Executive Director Lauren Marquette explained. “Everyone has a story.”

Watkins stressed 75 percent of the money raised by Komen Ozark stays here locally, so just taking part in the Race is key.

“It’s really important, one, for people to participate but to know why and what the advantages are when they do,” Watkins said.

The Race is the signature fundraising event for Komen Ozark and they depend upon the support of the community to carry out their mission.

“If we’re able to give out funds in the community, it’s because of the Race for the Cure,” Marquette shared.

“Bring your friends,” Watkins implored. “Have some fun and know that you’re doing something wonderful for people, who you’ll see that day and some people that you’ll never see.”

There is still plenty of time to take part in the big event. And Komen Ozark is offering up lots of prizes for hitting fundraising goals — like capes, hats, blankets and shirts. Just click here to get signed up. You can also go to the Race office at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade mall this week.
