Walmart Shareholders Week ‘Shares’ Unserved Food With Area Shelters

The 46th annual Walmart Shareholders meeting has come to a close, and those in need are benefiting from what’s leftover.

Instead of throwing away unserved meals, Razorback Food Recovery teamed up with local agencies to save the food for those in need.

“This is important because food insecurity is such a problem,” said Christian Bourdo, Chair Razorback Food Recovery.

Thousands of pounds of unused food from the shareholders meeting is being ‘shared’ with those in need.

“Whatever goes unserved, whatever’s been kept at temperature, prepared and kept appropriately goes on this truck to be frozen,” said Claire Allison, Program Coordinator Center for Community Engagement.

More than 10,000 pounds of food have been collected by Allison and students from Razorback Food Recovery.
It will go to area homeless shelters, soup kitchens and food banks for low income families.

Allison said, “these agencies are feeding those in need every day of the week sometimes so to have this volume of food that’s high quality and prepared, I think is really important to them.”

“We have several households who are going to benefit immediately as soon as we get home,” said Dawn Jones, Washington Plaza Apartments Residents Council Food Bank. “It’s a sense of reinforcement that someone else they don’t even know cares about them.”

Food insecurity is something that speaks to the heart of these volunteers, and this recovery is just one step toward solving that problem.

“Food recovery’s a common sense solution, you can see the food and the immediate impact that it makes,” Allison said. “Food is the most wasted product in our society, and a lot of that his household waste too, so just be aware of that and educate yourself.”
