Warm Winter Impacts Snow Removal Businesses

JOPLIN, MO.— When many of us see this fluffy white stuff, we think of shoveling, difficult driving conditions, and the freezing cold. But for the owners of R&D Lawn Care and Landscaping, it equals dollar signs.

“We heavily rely on having something to do in the winter,” said Derrick Brown, R&D Lawn Care and Landscaping.

While Southwest Missouri saw approximately 23 inches of snow in December and January last year, this year there was none.

“Pretty much not much work at all for our snow removal side,” said Brown.

Derrick Brown says the snow removal is about 10 -15% of their business. Without it, they have to make up the cost somewhere.

“Unfortunately in the winter time, if we don’t have a lot of snow, we’re not able to keep as many guys going as we’d like. We try to keep staffed all year, so a lot of our guys have had to go back to seasonal work this year,” he said.

His staff of 15 men has been reduced to eight. While the groundhog might says there will be six more weeks of winter, if it doesn’t snow, that won’t be good for business.

“Snow removal is a vital part of our company and it is to any landscaping company,” said Brown.

At this point, Brown and his employees have their fingers crossed for an early spring.

“We go to different services real quick. We go to mowing grass,” said Brown.

R&D Landscaping maintains more than 100 properties in the Joplin area, doing everything from snow removal to lawn care.
