Several new Washington County justices of the peace took a tour of the Washington County Juvenile Detention Center last week and also toured the Washington County Adult Detention Center.
The justices requested the tours and Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder said it’s an excellent way to build relationships with the Quorum Court.
“The quorum court has a very important job when it comes to county business and that they control the budgets. They have to have a clear understanding of why we request the things we do and what our specific needs are,” said Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder.
“The biggest takeaway for me is, I really felt we needed to know the facilities, know the people, know what it is we’re legislating about before we go in and legislate,” said Ward 11 Justice of the Peace Suki Highers.
A vote for a $30 million jail expansion was tabled at a Quorum Court meeting in December.
