Washington County USAR Teams Prepare for Tropical Storm Gordon

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) — Fire departments all across Washington County are making sure their urban search and rescue teams are prepared in case help is needed here or across the state.

Willie Watts is the Washington County Technical Rescue Team Leader and says the county always stays at a heightened level of readiness.

“We get updates from the national weather service. We take data from them a couple times a day and we monitor that data and push it out to our folks to make sure everyone is aware of what’s going on in the event that we do have an emergency,” Watts said.

On Thursday, Farmington Fire Department’s urban search and rescue team made sure extra batteries were on hand for flashlights and glow sticks, and familiarized themselves with equipment and a rescue boat.

Watts says every fire station in the county has at least one firefighter that specializes in swift and still water rescue.

Springdale and Fayetteville Fire Departments also prepared their equipment in case of a water emergency this week.
