FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas’ interim Athletic Director Julie Cromer Peoples addressed the media Friday night following the firing of head football coach Bret Bielema saying there would be no search committee to find the next “Head Hog.”
“I do feel that I’ve been given the authority to find the best coach for us,” Peoples said. “There will be some people I lean on for support, but there won’t be a formal search committee for this proces.”
Peoples said she doesn’t believe the university needs a permanent athletic director to make an offer — just an AD — which she is. She added she’s looking for a coach who can be successful in the SEC. She says she’s not limiting the pool of coaches to those who have coached in the conference.
Peoples added she doesn’t think the school will have any problem finding candidates interested in the job.
While the search takes place, Paul Rhodes will serve as the interim head coach.
In talking about Bielema, she said he’s the only coach the school has separated with. She’ll meet with the rest of the football coaching staff Saturday at 10 a.m.
When questioned about the timing of the termination, Peoples said she thought it was important that she informed Bielema in a manner that allowed him to speak to his players before they left town.
In regards to the amount of Bielema’s buyout, Peoples said that will be paid by the Razorback Foundation. They’ll release those details.
