Winter Weather Leaves Drivers Stranded

News

Snow blew through the area, causing trouble on the roads and leaving many drivers stranded.

The snow only lasted a couple of hours, but it left some roads frozen over across Northwest Arkansas causing multiple wrecks in both Benton and Washington counties.

“Go slow and leave lots of distance.” said a driver, Tiffany Hermsen.

Only a dusting accumulated on the ground, but that was enough to give many drivers a headache on the roadways.

“You got people who don’t know how to drive it and they drive just like they normally would,” said Rogers resident, Robin Pace.

Tow trucks were out rescuing some in Fayetteville, while state troopers and highway patrol assisted with wrecks on I-49 in Springdale.

“You just have to drive a little bit differently,” Pace said.

Some roads seemed safe to drive on during the morning hours, causing commuters no problems.

Other streets like 26th in Rogers were completely covered in ice.

They have been pre-treating on the east, the west, and the central parts of the county.

We have been out and bout since about 7 o’clock Friday morning,” Benton County Communications Director, Channing Barker, said.

Barker said the Benton County Road Department has been preparing for this for two days now, but that alone isn’t enough.

“We as drivers need to take many precautions every morning when we are going out in this kind of winter weather,” Barker said.

Not every driver was caught off guard Sunday (March 3) morning some were more prepared than others.

“Definitely take caution. I know from experience when the roads are this cold, the pre-treatment doesn’t help anyway,” Hermsen said.

Some locals say preparation before hitting the road can make all the difference.

“Getting the snow off the cars so we can see to drive. I’m used to driving in it so I’ll take the chance,” Pace said.
